These are maths symbols, not formatting.
They look like bold or italic text and they are separate characters with separate meanings. Screen readers usually either read them out as symbol names — “mathematical bold small e”, once per letter — or skip them entirely, so a blind reader may hear nothing at all. They are also excluded from search on X and LinkedIn, are not translated, and will not linkify inside a hashtag.
Worth using for a word or two. Not worth using for a headline, a name, or anything you want found.

Facebook gives you no formatting toolbar, so what everybody actually does is substitute characters that look bold or italic. They come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, encoded so that a paper can tell the vector 𝐱 from the scalar x.
The substitution is not simple arithmetic. Unicode left twenty-four holes in that block's Latin range — letters that already existed elsewhere — so a generator that just adds an offset produces unassigned codepoints, which render as empty boxes. Every hole is patched here, and a script in the repository asserts that no style can emit an unassigned character.
Text you paste in is turned back into plain letters before a style is applied, so switching between styles works instead of silently doing nothing.
Mostly, and not entirely. These are real Unicode characters, so any app can display them if its font has them — and some fonts do not. Each style on this page is labelled with how widely it renders; the ones marked as risky are missing from enough Android font stacks that a real share of readers will see empty boxes instead of letters.
Because these are not the letters they look like. A search for “marketing” does not match the mathematical characters that spell it in bold, so a styled headline is invisible to search on X and LinkedIn, a styled hashtag never becomes a hashtag, and translation tools pass the whole thing through untranslated. If the words matter, leave them plain.

Braille displays have no mapping for most of them. Use a styled word or two for emphasis if you like; do not put your name, your headline, or the point of the post in them.
You can, and it is the one place we would tell you not to. A name in styled characters cannot be found by anybody searching for you, cannot be read aloud by a screen reader, and on LinkedIn a decorated name is a documented reason for a profile to be restricted. Style a word inside a post if you want emphasis; leave your name alone.
